I work with students, researchers, NGOs and academics to improve their writing and communicate their work clearly.
I have spent over 20 years in academia, hold a science-based doctorate (PhD) in Marine Biology and am a Research Associate in Artificial Intelligence (AI). I have published peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, written grant applications and supported more students than I can count through their assignments and dissertations.
I enjoy reading manuscripts from all disciplines, and I love helping writers develop their skills, polish manuscripts and use AI thoughtfully and appropriately.
How I work
Whether I am editing a manuscript or giving feedback on an assignment, I start with establishing whether the argument is clear, if the evidence is convincing, and if the structure helps the reader. Then I work down to the detail of clarity, flow, accuracy and consistency.
I edit using track changes in Microsoft Word or suggestions in Google Docs, so you can see every change and decide what to keep. My comments provide constructive feedback, explaining why and how something could be stronger, not just what to change. The aim of this is that you learn as you go and your next piece of writing is easier.
Importantly, your work stays yours. I follow academic integrity guidelines, and I never write text for you. Everything you share with me is kept confidential, and I work efficiently to meet your deadlines.
I am particularly experienced in supporting writers who use English as an additional language (e.g., ESL students).
Writing in the age of AI
AI is changing how we read, research and write, and how students learn. Having read hundreds of generic, AI-generated undergraduate assignments, my concern is that the core skills behind writing are being lost. Through academic writing, we don't only produce a comprehensive piece of text, we read, think, evaluate, decide, debate and explore evidence. We develop our own writing style - our own voice.
Drawing on my experience with AI, I help students and academics understand if, when and how to use AI effectively so that is supports their own thinking and judgement, rather than replacing it.
